Scouting - Merit Badge Days
Coming Spring 2013
Scouting Geology & Archaeology
Are you a Boy Scout or Girl Scout of any age or program who is in search of exciting and fascinating badges or interest patches? Would you like to learn about the earth, and the history of its human inhabitants? Come to the New Jersey State Museum’s Scouting Day to learn about these fascinating subjects from the Museum’s professional geologists, paleontologists and archaeologists. Our staff will be on hand to guide you through the Museum’s collection of specimens, tools and maps. Don’t forget to bring your own collections: we’ll help you identify those too!
Find out what geologists and archaeologists do. Our staff’s expertise will help you fulfill many of the requirements to earn your merit badge, interest patch, or webelos requirements. Counseling is available at the Museum. Advance reservations are required but it is not necessary to be a Scout to enroll in the program.
Scouting Astronomy
The New Jersey State Museum Planetarium will present SCOUTING ASTRONOMY. This program is designed to aid in fulfilling the requirements for the Scout merit badge in astronomy. However, it is not necessary to be a Scout to enroll in the program. Groups need attend only one session. Scouts will learn how to find constellations of different seasons, how to use the Big Dipper to find the North Star, how to read a star map, and how to locate stars of different colors. Special attention will be paid to the characteristics of the Moon and planets and the concept of distance within the solar system and beyond.
