ABOUT THE FRIENDS OF THE STATE MUSEUM

In 1968 the State Museum established a 501(c)(3) support group, the Association of the Arts, to assist in raising funds for fine art acquisitions. Four years later this organization broadened its mission to include all State Museum collections and services and changed its name to Friends of the New Jersey State Museum.

The Friends of the New Jersey State Museum spent a day touring the "Forts on the Delaware" in September. Led by our own Archaeology/Ethnology Committee Chair, Ian Burrow, (R) families and friends visited Fort Mott on the New Jersey side of the river, pictured here, as well as Fort Delaware.

The Friends maintain an office in the State Museum main building at 205 West State Street. Governed by a Board of Trustees chosen annually by the membership, the Friends offer fundraising and volunteer support for the Museum. During the past year, 226 volunteers gave nearly 12,000 hours of service working primarily as docents, collections assistants, and organizers of a variety of fund raisers.

Membership dues help the Friends fund a broad spectrum of quality educational programs at the State Museum. These include offerings for youth and families, special exhibitions, children's theatre and performing arts programs, Super Science Weekend and the Kaleidoscope Kids Summer Academy, as well as publications and acquisitions for the collections. In exchange, members enjoy special invitations to exhibition openings and other special events, an informational newsletter mailed three times a year, announcements of monthly day trips to exciting venues, and a discount on purchases in the Museum Shop.
